Welcome or welcome back to my blog! Today, I want to share the project that I was working on before quarantine began: my new bedroom.
My family moved right when I got back from Thailand. I was not looking forward to getting a smaller bedroom, but I took this as an opportunity to create the ideal bedroom I’ve wanted.
Here is my small bedroom ideas/room tour!
First things first, figure out what aesthetic you’d like to go for. My bedroom is my sanctuary. I do everything in my room, so it is essential for me to create a space that feels cozy, stays *moderately* tidy, and can be a productive and creative playground for me.
As always, I got my inspiration from Pinterest. Check out my future apartment (house, rather) inspiration board.
I chose to go with a neutral theme. White, beige, tan, gold, grey, and touches of marble and green plants. I’ve grown quite a bit since my pink, purple, black, and gold freshman dorm room. My bedroom is already small, so I decided to have lighter colors to give the illusion of the space being bigger when the sun shines in.
Secondly, if you have a small room and you aren’t using LED light bulbs, what are you doing? Bright lighting will help your space feel larger after the sun goes down and give you the feeling of natural light. I also recommend thin white curtains to let light in but still give you privacy.
Next, storage. When you don’t have much space to store things around your room, storing upwards is key. I bought the LACK shelves from IKEA to store my shoes because no matter where I lived (on campus or off) I could never figure out how to store my shoes until now. To spice it up I added LED lights from Amazon to illuminate my go-to shoes and accessories. I also got these shelves for my desk so that I can store everything I need and still have a clear working space.
Another storage hack is to store your junk, I mean treasured items, out of plain sight. I have storage bins from Target and Five Below for different things such as my hair products, K through 12 memories, songwriting notebooks, pajamas, dress shoes and heels, and shit I literally don’t know where to put. An ottoman is another way to store your items and it doubles as a seating area. Your room can still be a mess, but no one has to know.
Next, decorate the walls, but not too much. I purchased wall art from Etsy that really resonated with me and painted the picture frames with gold paint. On the opposite wall, I added a marble white board and bulletin board from Target and filled it up with concert tickets and memories. In the entry way, I have my yearly calendar with all my assignments, appointments, and vacation days that I’m currently erasing, lol. There’s still a considerable amount of wall space to ensure my room isn’t too loud. (Btw the glass broke on the middle frame, I’m replacing it soon!)
The next one is something I learned very recently. If your space is small enough, consider downsizing to a twin bed if you have a full bed or larger. I was the least excited to move down from my queen size bed, but it was actually the best decision I made.
I always thought twin sized beds were for college dorms and children. Turns out, the biggest difference between a twin bed and a full bed or larger is the number of people it’s intended to fit.
Basically, a twin bed is supposed to fit one person, full beds offer a bit more space if you’re single but fit two people, and as you move up you can fit the whole family. Point is, a twin bed isn’t as luxurious but it’s definitely enough for me as a single sleeper. I got my bed frame and mattress brand new from Facebook marketplace for less than $500 the original cost from Amazon. Shout out to my friend Trong for putting me on to FB Marketplace!
Here are some other parts of my room to give you a peek!
Last things: I wouldn’t recommend breaking your bank for new room decor. That’s not the point of this blog post. If you do choose to purchase new items, I would recommend buying items that will last long and adapt to your style as your tastes change and evolve. I made sure to buy new items that I’d want for my post grad, big girl apartment. Also, save money wherever you can by purchasing second hand!
Carpe Diem Question: By turning my new, tiny bedroom into the Pinterest room I’ve always wanted, I start every day in the best mindset I’ve ever had to take on the day. What have you done or what can you do to transform your space into a spiritual, creative playground that explains you and your story?
Carpe Diem – Seize the Day!
