In December, I created a question on Instagram asking what you all wanted to see on my blog, and one person asked for me to post about ‘fashion, style, and how [I] came to dress the way [I] do.’ I don’t really consider myself a fashion icon, but in many places in my life people have told me that I am, so let’s go with it. Here’s the breakdown of my style plus some outfits that I would be wearing if we could go outside. Plus, I might as well since my plan to do a Europe Lookbook is out of the window.
My Style
To describe the way that I like to dress, I’ve created five categories that sum up my closet. A few of my outfits overlap in categories, so I’ll go through each category first then show the outfits.
1. Color Palette- Color Theory
Color Theory
is used in art, photography, fashion, etc. to show what colors look good when paired together.
I first learned about color theory through Instagram influencer Aerin Creer (@aerincreer) a few years ago, and she uses it to construct some of her outfits.
The combinations that I like the most follow the “Split Complementary’ theme, when you choose a base color and you match it with one or two adjacent colors from across the color wheel. My favorite combination colors are green, orange, blue, and yellow. I normally wouldn’t wear colors this bright because I tend to like more muted colors, but this is how I make the brightest colors work.
2. Current trends- The Bermuda Shorts Comeback
Just like most people interested in fashion, I look into the current styles. I only follow the trends that have longevity, however. I don’t hop on any trends that I do not think will last longer than a year. In general, when I buy new clothing, I buy it with plans of keeping it as long as possible.
Bermuda shorts are coming back from the third grade, and I’m all here for it. Some designers have made shorts for $60+. I’ve saved money by buying cheap sweatpants from Walmart and mom jeans from Goodwill to create my own shorts.
3. Style-Vintage/Streetwear
I’ve shopped at thrift stores for most of my life, and I love the excitement of finding something unique. Streetwear has a different look depending on the city you’re in (for example, streetwear in Seoul, South Korea is very different from Brooklyn, NY). I’d say my style favors the NY version. Clothing pieces from the 80s and 90s plus a pair of trendy sneakers is an easy and effortless outfit.
4. Color Palette- Neutrals
I’ve been told most of my outfits follow a neutral palette. Brown, beige, creams, and whites makeup most of my fall wardrobe, for sure. I think the right combination of neutrals can look good on everyone.
5. Clothing Item- Graphic Tees
Graphic tee shirts are an easy addition to a closet because you can dress them up by tucking into a skirt with heels, or wear them with jeans and matching shoes. It’s a simple way to make your outfits look more intentional without really trying.
6. Rules of Thumb- Accessories and Sustainability
For accessories, I always wear at least two gold necklaces and gold earrings. My current favorite earring combo is gold hoops on my main lobe piercings, small gold or pearl studs in my second lobe piercings, and a diamond stud in my cartilage. It’s an easy way to look more put together. Lastly, I have been trying to be more conscious of my consumption, so I’ve been secondhand shopping a lot more: Depop, Thrift stores, and Grailed.com have been my go-tos. The production of clothing is horrible for the environment, so try little ways to look good without destroying the Earth further. 🙂
